My congratulations to the "culprit". I hope it burned well.
It is a despicable act - let's hope the culprit is found and suitably punished. No doubt he/she will soon be boasting about his/her actions and one law abiding citizen will report the matter to the police. Recent research by the Road Traffic Authority (not a local project)in 2006 indicates that those with penalty points for speeding are over 20% more likely to be involved in accidents. I do not like fixed speeding traps but recognise the need for them. With other measures such as bollards, they have achieved a reduction in road deaths in Lincolnshire. This is to be welcomed.
I do not accept the view held by many "macho" motorists that the existence of speed cameras is a means of revenue for the police. I would however, wish to continue to have traffic officers patrolling our lethal roads and discretion (? few miles over) to continue to be applied.
The Road Safety Partnership has a website - worth reading to see the scale of the problem in the county and what they are doing to reduce unnecessary deaths. Destroying one of the tools used to achieve this aim is to be deplored!
Interesting post from Michael, there. He currently lives abroad (he tells us) recently in America and Japan, both nations with much lower speed limits than ours.
Do tell Michael, how are you treating local law enforcement where you are currently living?
Most of the laws here are reasonable. You are right, speed limits in Japan are much lower. On the rare occasion that I can drive somewhere without encountering an old Japanese person driving at 20 mph, I routinely break the speed limit, often driving at double the limit. This is in fact quite safe. Most Japanese people completely ignore the speed limits as well. On one day every year, the local authority here collects some money by setting up a speed gun. Everyone pays about 60 pounds. Then everyone returns to speeding unhindered the next day. A real community event. Not ideal but I think a situation preferable to England. I also broke the speed limits in France when I was a student there. They had speed cameras but you got to know where they were. Slow down...wave at the nice man...return to 120km/ph. The only other law I break here is to do with garbage disposal. I refuse to put my garbage into 20 different coloured bags, with assorted ribbons, for collection on various days of the week. I pile all my rubbish up, and then drive to a quiet spot near a Government building and dump it late at night. You can stick Kyoto up your arse ne.
Aside from these bizarre practices, Japan is a great country and I shall miss it. Alas I have to leave in June. Thankfully it will not be Gordy's socialist utopia I shall be returning to.
Dare we ask which nation is fortunate enough to be getting the great flytipper next?
Spain. Only been there on holiday before. I do hope they don't have this silly environmentalism there. I realise they have a socialist Government(courtesy of the Madrid bombings), but I am a slave of my company and merely follow orders.
