David Cameron claims to champion marriage - so why hasn't he welcomed the news this week that divorce rates in Britain are the lowest for 22 years .
Trouble for Dave is that the good news on divorce is yet another blow for his street cred - and his campaign that Britain is a broken society that only he can fix.

No surprise given the fall over the last ten years in people actually getting married in the first place.
Geoffrey:
read the link:
"Some 132,562 couples split in 2006 - equivalent to 12.2 of every 1,000 married couples, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed. "
"This was 7% lower than 2005 - 13.1 in 1,000 - and the lowest since 1984. "
Interesting stuff indeed. Where does this leave the Tory proposal of paying everyone £20 to get married?
The figures are based on divorces per married couples. Do you have the stats that relate to divorces per number of marriages (in each year) for the last few years or are these figures not as attractive? Also, would be interested to see the avarage length of time that a divorce takes to go through. This would perhaps gives us a clearer overall picture. I'm not saying you are wrong, just that a broader set of statistics would help provide a more accurate overview. Thanks.
