Hello Phil,
I've just been reading your blog dated Thursday March 8th 2007 about one Patrick Mercer.
Any idea what became of him?
Do you agree with Micheal Ancram?

as i said at the time, he's probably not a bad bloke, and seems to have been a soldier's soldier...
what became of him...? i hear he's entered Gordon's big tent along with John Bercow who has long been tipped (by others) as the next defector to Labour...

I haven't read his 30 page document which is reportedly a full frontal on Cameron's leadership...
From what I've seen, it appears to confirm my long held suspicions that the Conservative Party under Cameron remains totally divided - particularly on Europe, unchanged, and unleadable.
If Labour has no opinion on Ancram's ideas - except to rejoice that they are not the same as Cameron's - then the best advice must be to avoid party politics because it's an empty game.
Or have I got this wrong?

you asked me and i responded with my view of the story.
i don't know whether "Labour" has an opinion on Amcram's ideas - but i note that it was former Tory Cabinet Minister Michael Portillo who called Ancram's ideas a full frontal attack on Cameron, not me.
Yes, i think you're wrong about party politics.
i belong to a party because i believe in a set of values which i work to promote.
you may think it's empty. my view is that its what achieves change.
of course, i could equally be wrong...
but are you suggesting that Ancram's comments were not another mauling for Cameron...?
I think that my support for Patrick Mercer recently has now been justified.
Given that his wife is a long standing and card holding member of the Labour Party I am very surprised (and dissapointed) that Bercow didn't go the full distance.
Perhaps this is yet another example a Prime Minister who wants a new type of politics stirring up trouble again just like he did by splitting the Home Office and Education Departments earlier this year.
So you do have values.
Would they be closer to Cameron than Ancram?
I think they would.
Mine are.
Much though I enjoy another mauling for David Cameron, I'd want some substance.
